A BBH HISTORY LESSON: THE MONOGRAM!
Aug 28th 2019
You may be familiar with the monogram as one of the options for our personalized gifts here at Baby Be Hip, but do you know how the monogram first came about?! With so many monogrammed gifts going in and out of our office, we decided a little history lesson was in order to sharpen our skills!
Originally, the monogram was used on coins by Green and Romans to identify their rulers, and then painters and artists during the Middle Ages began using their initials as a signature on their work. During the Victorian era, the most popular monogram style was introduced by members of the high society, a style still used today – first initial, last initial, middle initial in that order.
Our traditional monogram at Baby Be Hip for our monogrammed burp cloths and gifts is the most widely used style, with the baby’s first initial on the left, the last name initial larger in the middle, and then the middle name initial on the right.
For married couples, the appropriate monogram is the husband’s first initial on the left, their joint last name initial larger in the middle, and wife’s first initial on the right, as seen on our Classic Initial Bucket. For married women, the most commonly used monogram format is their married last name initial, first name initial, and maiden name initial.
Hope you enjoyed our first ever BBH history lesson!
